Sausages Paired With Craft Beers

Merlion Wayfarer was recently invited to a food-tasting session by Open Rice and Lil Papa’s Wieners Beerstro (Thank you, guys!). The venue was an outlet right smack in the midst of some HDB blocks located within walking distance of the business district.

The Appetizers

We were given the choice of a "Lemonade" or "Cherry Coke" to go with our appetizer. Being swah-koo ("mountain tortoise") to not have actually seen a Cherry Coke in her life, Merlion Wayfarer opted for the Cherry Coke. Served in a beer glass (there are scores of different beer glasses here!), it was manufactured in UK. Cool hor!

Here's how the Lemonade looked like - Sweet and sour, with real lemon slices added!

This is the Crunchy Bruschetta Pesto…

For those of us who are less knowledgeable about Italian food (e.g. Merlion Wayfarer who only knows spaghetti and pizza but who's always willing to learn new romantic-sounding Italian food names!), Bruschetta (Italian pronunciation: [bru'sket:ta]) is an antipasto from Italy whose origin dates to at least the 15th century. It consists of toasted bread rubbed with garlic and topped with extra-virgin olive oil, salt and pepper. Variations may include toppings of spicy red pepper, tomato, vegetables, beans, cured meat, or cheese. Bruschetta is usually served as a snack or appetizer.(Wikipedia 2012).

Ok, cherry tomato, green pepper, garlic, basil with some cai you (菜油, vegetable oil a.k.a olive oil) on some pengkang roti. But hey! It tastes good... quite addictive, in fact. One no enough, definitely starts one eating!

We were then given some chips to keep our gastric juices pumping while we finish our drinks and await the sausages and the beer...

Main Course #1

We were offered three choices:
  • Non-spicy
  • Spicy
  • Very spicy
Lil Papa's Fav Wiener consisted of roasted mustard pork in homestyled baked beans, mayonnaise, onions, seaweed and curry powder. The "Elephant Beer" (ooops, ale) is beside the hot dog...

Sincago Wiener was beef,  topped with mild American mustard, chopped white onions, sweet hotdog relish, sliced pickles, green hot peppers, cherry tomatoes, and a dash of celery salt...

Sambal Sin Wiener consisted of spicy chicken in traditional sambal sauce, red onions, sliced pineapples, sesame seeds and cilantro...

The 全家福 family photo...

The sour ale which Merlion Wayfarer liked. It was like a Ribena beer with its strong fruity taste...

Main Course #2

The owner enlightening us on beers and wieners. We learnt quite a bit, e.g. what's the different between a beer, a lager, an ale, and its country of production...

The generous Naked Sausage Platter with a sprinkle of grated cheese - Curry ketchup, sauerkraut, cherry tomatoes, bell pepepers, sliced pickles and pineapples over hot and spicy Italian Porkies and Pork Beer Bratwursts. Sausages were succulent and grilled to yumminess...

We were given another drink to top it off. Many of us liked the Toffee Apple Cider’s sweet caramel taste…

About The Icon

When we first arrived at the outlet, we were all attracted by the cute cartoon character with shades, sideburns and a goatee. It was everywhere – the menu, the signboard, the walls, the menu, there were even stickers of this character!

It was painted on the wall. Interestingly, the light at the nearby table added a sheen to the halo around its head...

We started wondering... which of the staff was he?

Later, the owner told us a touching story about this character - That it represented his grandfather. He was his favourite grandson, and decided to commemorate his grandfather in this special way - by designing a cartoon character after him. His grandfather loved beer, and he loves sausages. That is why this cartoon character always has a beer in his left hand, and a hot dog in his right.

About The Environment

Lil Papa's Wieners Beerstro's flyer with its oh-so-many beers!

Some of the American beers with scenic labels...

One of the interesting ales there - "Oaked Arrogant Bastard Ale". With such a description, ahem... who wouldn't wanna drink more?

The menu with the choice of both customized and do-it-yourself sausages...

 Best beer in the world...

A whole shelf of score of different types of beer!

The benefits of beer - Hey it is true! One of us foodtasters started getting forgetful after all the alcohol. *Burp!*
