Brotzeit's Karneval 2018 - Festival Favourites & Traditional Beer From Cologne

Come 16 January to 25 February 2018, Brotzeit is bringing the flavours and Gemütlichkeit (German for a feeling of warmth, friendliness, and good cheer) of Karneval to Singapore with a specially-curated Karneval menu, featuring festival favourites and traditional beer from the land of Karneval, Cologne. Brotzeit is also introducing their We Dare You! Brotzeit Challenge, a “Man Vs Food” sausage-eating challenge for a pair of friends to finish eating a half-meter sausage baguette together.

About Karneval

Karneval is a traditional German festival that dates back hundreds of years to mark the beginning of Lent. It is a time of eating, drinking and merriment, usually accompanied by a huge parade combining elements of a circus, masks and social satire. As part of the festivities, street vendors selling simple German fare such as pretzels and bratwursts, as well Karneval’s specialty beers, can be found on every corner to satisfy any hunger pangs.

Brotzeit’s Half-Meter Sausage Challenge

Brotzeit dares you to take on their Half-metre German Sausage Challenge. Teams of two will each have four minutes to finish a half-meter of Brotzeit’s Deutsche Halbmeter Wurst, featuring classic Nürnberger sausages, served with sauerkraut and potato salad in a baguette. That’s about as long as an entire adult forearm! Any team that completes the challenge within the stipulated four minutes will enjoy the sausage on the house, as well as bragging rights as Brotzeit’s Wurst Champions.

Karneval Festive Menu

With a friend, share a Zweierlei von Huhn (Duo of Chicken, $40) - a combination of half an oven-roasted chicken and half a golden fried chicken, served with fries and potato salad on the side. Alternatively, try out Brotzeit’s Yummylicious Trio ($24), which comes with 2 glasses of draft beers or 2 bottles of Kölsch beer (0.3L). The trio features a trifecta of oven-baked meatloaf, chicken schnitzel with rocket leaves, and German meat patty with gherkin and lettuce, all served on a single platter.


Can’t stop at one? Brotzeit’s selection of Deutsche Tapas (German Tapas, 3 for $15, 6 for $28, 12 for $45) will leave you spoilt for choice. Choose from a variety of 12 different bites: Bierbeisser, super food salad, spicy chicken sausages, currywurst, golden fried chicken, cheese spätzle, meatballs, seabass filet, fried mushrooms, meatloaf in mini kaiser roll, chicken schnitzel in mini kaiser roll, and their meat patty in mini kaiser roll.


Beer-lovers will definitely be able to appreciate the Karneval-exclusive Gaffel Kölsch (1 bottle at $10, bucket of 5 at $48, 5L party keg at $98), a fresh specialty beer from Cologne with a delicate blend of a bitter yet pleasant and slightly hoppy taste. Brewed according to a time-honored family recipe and the German Purity Law of 1516, Gaffel Kölsch is clearly distinguished from all other Kölsch brands.

Christmas Sharing Platter

And for those who want it all, there is Brotzeit’s Christmas Sharing Platter ($118) combing the signature Roast Pork Knuckle, a selection of Veal and Venison Sausages, Roast Pork Roulade and Veal Shank, with ample sides of seasonal vegetables, mash potato and dumplings to satisfy a group of 4 persons and above.


Alternatively, the Crispy Pork Belly Roulade ($32) can be ordered separately. The tender pork belly is first infused with winter-time herbs then slow-roasted to achieve succulent layers of meat and fat, and topped off with irresistibly crisp crackling skin. When paired with creamy potato gratin, roasted vegetables and then drizzled with a beer-infused sauce, this becomes a dish that Christmas dreams are made of.

Desserts

Chef Ranner’s Christmas specialties extend to dessert as well, bringing diners in Singapore a chance to discover a typical festive market treat of warm, crisp Choco Drizzled Waffles ($12) with walnut ice cream, plum sauce and a drizzling of decadent molten chocolate. Merlion Wayfarer was walking along Bugis+ one fine Saturday when she was abruptly thrusted with a flyer on a certain "S-One Expo". There were lots of attractive visuals with a list of workshops listed. What fascinated her most was the "Cuckoo Clock Making Workshop" at 1200 hours on Sunday. Despite having a packed weekend, she decided to squeeze in some time for this special event.
The newsletter printed daily for the event, the complimentary meal coupons and the lucky draw slips...

The organizers really went all out to recreate the environment of Stuttgart. Look at the white-painted metal chairs and wooden benches set amidst a transparent wallpaper against some glass windows! Add a little of bird chirping and one will really feel like in the forest there!


Giant wooden figurines are placed strategically all over the Expo grounds
for visitors to snap memorable shots of their visit...

The ball-bouncing bubble at the exit that little kids play in while their parents ate and shopped...

Boxes and boxes of delicious sweets and gummies, as the girl said - "all the way from Germany" -
butter gummies, fruit gummies, caramel toffees...


Refreshingly-coloured wines, oils and vinegars in elegant bottles with German labels
that the English-speaking Merlion Wayfarer could not decipher...
Elegant wood carving fridge magnets that illustrate various scenes in the German culture and countryside
- woodcutters, animals, cuckoo clocks, pine trees...

The carnival atmosphere and lively music makes one just to get up and dance a jig!

Hey, Merlion Wayfarer first got to hear about the Chinatown Social Enterprise here. Chinatown Social Enterprise (CSE) was formed to provide career opportunities for the elderly and needy residents living within Kreta Ayer - Kim Seng constituency or Central District. Its retail shop located at The Majestic was set up in May 2010 and it sells handicraft merchandise from various voluntary organizations. Its objectives are not only to impart management skills to the needy residents, but also to allow them to earn a living by themselves. Handmade cloth dolls made by the samsui women, together with other memorabilia, are sold here at the S-One Expo Stuttgart.

The Cuckoo Clock Workshop was full even before 1200 hours. Such was its popularity!

The participants were seated in a row of white tables
and given some wooden cuckoos to paint with dark brown wood paint...

This was followed by a session where the clockmaker showed them
how to use the chisel to shave a block of wood...


Gerhard, the clockmaker, hails from Black Forest in Germany. He lives about half an hour away from Lake Titisee and has a workshop nearby. It is not an easy job, he says, a lot of strength is required to chisel at the wood daily - his tough biceps can attest to that!

A cuckoo clock is a clock, typically pendulum-regulated, that strikes the hours with a sound like a common cuckoo's call and typically has a mechanical cuckoo that emerges with each note.

The story of clock making in the Black Forest began in the 1630s. People there had always crafted and carved using the local wood that was one of the few natural resources in the area, especially during the long winters when the land was covered with snow and they could hardly leave their houses. The clock with the unusual bird call very quickly spread around the region.
