Scotland coach Gregor Townsend was rewarded with a well-deserved 34-13 win over Italy for his first match in the first-ever international test match played between two Six Nations teams in Southeast Asia at Singapore's Sports Hub Stadium.
Singing of the national anthems by the choir...
The Scots delivered a five-try victory for their coach in front of over 9,000 fans at the Singapore National Stadium and were off to a fast start when flyhalf Finn Russell kicked Scotland into an early 3-0 lead after just six minutes. Italy drew level through a Tommaso Allan penalty in the 10th minute and managed to hold the Scots for most of the first half.
Scotland finally made the breakthrough in the 38th minute when scrumhalf Ali Price dived over the line for a 8-3 lead. At the stroke of half-time, Scotland scored yet another try when Tim Visser gathered a delightful chip kick from Russell. Duncan Taylor stepped up to convert for a 15-3 half time lead for Scotland.
Scotland's ever-present Scrum Half, Ali Price, was always visible in the thick of action..
Just two minutes into the second half, Scot Ben Toolis rose highest to claim a line-out and the Azzurris defence could do nothing to stop the rolling maul powering over its try line as veteran hooker Ross Ford grounded the first of his two tries.
Soon after, Italian Dean Budd was sent off for repeated infringements and a minute later, Scotland got the crowd on their feet through quick, off-loading rugby and a sensational team try which gave Ford his second try of the night as the Scots pushed to a 27-3 lead.
A Scotland handling error in the 67th minute allowed Italy flanker Maxime Mbanda to race clear before offloading to Michele Campagnaro to score Italy’s first try and to make the score 8-27.
In the 72th minute, Italy’s discipline failed them once again when Abraham Steyn earned a yellow for a dangerous play on Henry Pyrgos and a minute later, Scotland scored their fifth try of the night through Damien Hoyland, which Peter Horne converted from the touchline for a 34-8 lead.
In the dying moments, Italy managed to make the scoreline look more respectable when winger Angela Esposito dived over in the corner to make it 13-34.
"We knew conditions were going to be tough. It’s our first game together and we started well. Italy is a tough opponent and you need to keep working at it. The players kept believing themselves and worked hard to get the two tries before half time. Our team played some good rugby in the second half and our set-pieces were key to our victory."
--- Scotland Coach Gregor Townsend ---
"Our guys never stop trying, but we had some tough calls tonight and it’s hard to play with one less man. We had to really make up ground and we need to work on our discipline. We played some incredible defence as Scotland had a lot of possession. I’m proud of the boys as they kept going and deserved the two tries in the end."
--- Italy coach Conor O’Shea ---
Dakota Crescent - Life Slows Down
The 17 blocks of low-rise brick-clad flats were built by the Singapore Improvement Trust in the British colonial days of 1958 and handed over to its successor, the Housing Development Board (HDB), in 1960.
Located near the old Kallang Airport, the name Dakota was taken from the American transport aircraft Dakota DC-3, which commonly landed at Kallang Airport before it was closed.
Of the 648 two and three-room flats in the 17 blocks, only 60% are occupied presently. Most of the occupants are elderly residents and low-income families under HDB's public rental scheme.
Going to Dakota is like stepping back in time when life slows down...
Kiddie machines of yore - when all it takes is a 20c or 50c ride for a kid to be happy...
When fishing is the time to meet up with your friends, chat and spend a relaxing day...
A notice about a home-run business, operational from Mondays to Saturdays, with Sundays off...
Even the cat has time to slow down and curiously observe what you are doing with a camera...
To add to the nostalgia, a trishaw and an antique Mercedes were spotted too...
But then, maybe some things are different these days...
A foreign worker rests in front of his lorry, taking an afternoon siesta in the noon day heat...
While another, plants something below a tree nearby...
A couple from a nearby condominium bring their newborn out for a stroll...
New blocks of flats amidst a cleaner greener Kallang River, perfect for water sports...
Dakota Crescent will be vacated by the end of 2016 to make way for new developments under Mountbatten's estate renewal plans. Visit it now to enjoy a slice of Singapore-style nostalgia...
Singapore Rugby 7s - Kenya Upset Fiji In Stunning Victory
2:30 AM
Kallang, National Stadium, Rugby, Sports
Wow! What an exciting finish to the Singapore Rugby Sevens 2016 held at Singapore's awesome National Stadium. The surprising Kenya took 140 tournaments to break their losing streak and became only the second African nation after South Africa to win one HSBC World Rugby Sevens series leg. Rugby Sevens will feature for the first time in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio and chances looked good for Kenya as it was only their third time the team had advanced to the Cup final of Rugby Sevens series leg.
In the finals, Kenya, to the surprise of over 20,000 fans in the Singapore stadium, scored a 20-0 half-time lead over the crowd favourite and reigning Rugby Sevens champion Fiji with two of their four tries from their superb player Collins Injera.
The action on the rugby field was fast and furious with quick tries from Kenya. However, the interesting thing was Kenya failed to convert any of the kicks to get extra points on the scoreboard.

Fiji regrouped and briefly rallied after the half-time break, but Kenyan players were strong and packed with lots of pace.
Kenya held firm and scored two further tries to seal an upset win to create history in Singapore...
A strong Fiji defence in waiting...

With this special win in Singapore, Kenya team had shot up to seventh in the standings after their 22-points haul (first place winners), with Fiji extending their lead at the top to eight points (second place) over South Africa with two rounds remaining for the Rugby Sevens series in France and England. South Africa finished third after thrashing Argentina 28-0.Samoa landed the second tier Plate title after beating New Zealand, Scotland edged out United States to land the Bowl and Russia beat off Wales to win the Shield.
Overall, the Rugby Sevens which was previously held 10 years ago in Singapore, was a lot more exciting and drew over 23,000 fans to the stadium for the two days of rugby action on 16 and 17 April 2016.
With good entertainment like the famous DJ Pete Tong spinning the music track with live fireworks (after the first day rugby action) and bands playing rock music during the breaks, the Rugby Sevens event hopes to be an entertaining sporting spectacle on an annual basis in Singapore.
Rock, Ruck, Rumble and Cheers to Rugby!
