The Future of Voice Command with LG

Singapore
October 2013
[Media Release]
Voice command technology has taken major leaps in the last few years. For instance, it would have been unthinkable that you could give verbal commands to your TV or smartphone 10 years ago. However that possibility is here now, and it is set to reinvent the way we interact with technology.

Consumers’ desire for new ways to interact with devices is bringing attention to companies that specialise in digital voice technologies. Personal devices are becoming more “human” with perceptual hardware and software. This new form of interaction allows users to talk to their smartphones, search for directions or find information on the Web, just like how one interacts with another person.

LG Electronics is at the centre of helping to bring this technology to the masses, with the recent launch of its G2 premium smartphone, and is also looking at adding extra functionalities in its future smartphones.

VoiceMate, LG’s voice recognition technology, supports a wide number of the G2’s core features including phone control, search navigation and more. In tandem with the consumer-centric nature of the G2, VoiceMate was developed to emphasise the "human" element of its technology.

Furthermore, text messaging represents another opportunity to expand natural language technology across devices. The LG G2’s Text Link feature allows users to receive intelligent recommendations based on making sense of typed content in a breeze. It’s like having a built-in personal assistant in your phone.

LG's QuickRemote Software Development Kit

Singapore
October 2013
[Media Release]
LG Electronics (LG) announced the global availability of the Software Development Kit (SDK) for developers to create new functions on LG’s upgraded QuickRemote platform, a UX feature which allows the use of certain LG smartphones as a universal remote control. The new and enhanced QuickRemote version 3.0 made its debut on LG’s flagship G2 smartphone.

Developers can now create customized QuickRemote solutions for a variety of users, such as larger text and buttons for the elderly or animated buttons for the young-at-heart. Macro-buttons to control multiple devices with a single press, such as controlling a TV and set-top box together, are also possible with the QuickRemote SDK. Apps developed using the new SDK can be shared on LG SmartWorld or Google Play.

QuickRemote, which first debuted on the LG Vu:2, provides an easy-to-use interface for users to control their TVs, set-top boxes, audio systems or even air conditioners. QuickRemote 3.0 has been upgraded with the intelligent Learning Function and the ability to control a wider range of devices. With the Learning Function, QuickRemote can be “taught” to replicate any infrared (IR) remote control device, regardless of the manufacturer. A single LG smartphone equipped with QuickRemote can replace every remote control in the home, reducing clutter and putting an end to the days of the lost remote.

The QuickRemote SDK is already available for downloading at LG’s developer website (http://developer.lge.com).

Poh Cheu Hand Made Soon Kway - Kueh Tucked Away

Poh Cheu (宝洲) Hand Made Soon Kway
Bukit Merah Lane 1, Alexandra Village
South, Singapore
October 2013

Located in a corner of the Alexandra Village in heartland Bukit Merah, Poh Cheu is tucked away in a kopitiam which seems quietly nondescript - except for the snaking queue leading all the way outside its premises.

The long queue late at lunchtime, 20-30 people strong...

The stall is manned by about 5 staff, all wearing its trademarked T-shirt. Two of them sat in a corner table, making rolling wads of paste into fillings for ang ku kueh.

The 10 flavours of ang ku kueh - greeen bean, salted bean, green tea, mango, red bean, coconut, black sesame, durian, yam, peanut...

The prices of the ang ku kueh at 80c each are a bit pricey. Despite the ample filling (i.e. very little skin), the kueh is super oily. The artificial flavours (durian, green tea, mango) taste a tad artificial. Merlion Wayfarer recommends sticking to the "more original" flavours of peanut and red bean.

Sunset At The Kolam Ayer Waterfront

Kolam Ayer Waterfront, Kallang
East, Singapore
12 May 2013

The Kallang River (加冷河) flows for 10 kilometres from the Lower Peirce Reservoir to the coast at Nicoll Highway, making it the longest river in Singapore. The river mouth was traditionally at Kallang Basin, although extensive land reclamation around the area meant the river only flows into the open sea via the Marina Channel between Marina Centre and Marina East.

A pleasant stroll along the River at sunset - Enjoy time relaxing with your loved ones or chatting with the seniors and families gathered there...

In the fading sunlight, a flock of birds fly homeward...

Residents jogging in the paths lining such clean waters, lush greenery and fresh air...

In April 2006, the Singapore government announced plans to give a 200-metre stretch of the Kallang River at Kolam Ayer a S$2.5 million facelift. The project by the National Parks Board (NParks) and the Public Utilities Board (PUB) is part of the Active, Beautiful and Clean Waters Programme to transform rivers and reservoirs into vibrant community hubs, and to get Singaporeans to cherish and take care of their waterways.

By August 2007, the Kolam Ayer stretch of the river was transformed to include more greenery, floating decks, pathways and boardwalks for recreational activities. A water wheel was introduced as the centrepiece of the project. The water level will be kept at a constant level - 3 metres deep - making activities such as kayaking and dragon boating possible.

Fun equipment built for residents to exercise include the Archimedes Screw...

And the Water Wheel...
