Uniqlo's Ultra Stretch Jeans Launch

Ultra Stretch Jeans Showcase
Ion Orchard
Orchard
Central, Singapore
October 2012

Merlion Wayfarer attended Uniqlo's launch of its Ultra Stretch Jeans at Ion Orchard yesterday.

Long queue at "Guest Registration" and zero queue at "Media Registration"...

Freeflow of wine, soft drinks and honey lemon and litte nibbles served on a Uniqlo platter, quite thorough planning. The showcase of jeans can be seen behind...

Showcase of Ultra Stretch Jeans with testimonials from women...
Usher management was not very good. Guests were not shown where to sit, and were chased from media seats. Later, Merlion Wayfarer noted that organizers simply let other guests occupy the media seats, including the front row ones. And members of the public were able to enter the stage area to occupy the other seats.
The electrifying opening performance - creates zest and energy!
MediaCorp artistes Joanne Peh and Rebecca Lim were there as ambassadors for Uniqlo. It was interesting to see the range of expressions on the two. One was perpetually sunny, while the other had a gamut of expressions ranging from bored (she was constantly chewing gum), to condescending (Is the model prettier than me?), to disbelief (She can actually bend so much?)...

Waylaid by persistent fans seeking non-stop photos and autographs, and always obliging with smiles...

Stunning display of strength and agility by the contortonist duo -
All performed while wearing Uniqlo's Ultra Stretch Jeans!

Merlion Wayfarer was amazed by how this lady could completely rotate her hips 360 degrees
while doing a handstand on one hand!

Interesting way to start the modelling showcase - Silhouettes of the ultra tall and ultra slim models. The items worn are from Uniqlo's autumn and winter collections, including flannels, overcoats, scarves. To showcase the stretchability of the jeans, the models sat and stepped on the blocks strategically placed along the runway...

Linda Black, the emcee (also in jeans!) interviewing the two artistes.
Note the interesting expressions...
The three girls from Singapore's national rhythmic gymnastics team in very flexible poses...

The two artistes posing for photos with reporters...

Alibaba's Le Petit Paradis

Le Petit Paradis, Alibaba Eating House
Joo Chiat / Marine Parade
East, Singapore
October 2012
Merlion Wayfarer heard about Le Petit Paradis from her friends. Well, it was more like, she heard that there was a french stall in a kopitiam in the Marine Parade area. So she went a-hunting when she went on a walk in the area on one fine weekend. The first weekend, she didn't find it. It was only after a filling dinner that she saw the sign when she was crossing the traffic light. Awwww what a waste!
So the second weekend, she kept her stomach empty for a lunch at this stall. French food here we come!
A good start with some lemon tea while we await the French delicacies...

A yet-to-be-assembled Hamburger:
  • The bread was lightly toasted and spread with some white butter.
  • The fries had a sprinkling of spice and salt on it and were fragrant and crispy.
  • A whole sheet of cheddar cheese is melted on top of the beef hamburger patty.
  • The brown mushroom sauce is so deliciously addictive that there was a need for a second helping!

Duck Confit (S$14.50)
  • The main ingredient of the dish - the duck was a bit tough and dry.
  • When soaked in the light lemon butter sauce, together with the butter mashed potato, it was a good mix.

Even though about 80-90% of the patrons in the kopitiam ordered from the other stalls, e.g. noodles, chicken rice, Merlion Wayfarer waited a looooong time for her food, about 30 minutes. Service was also basic and no-frills. So this place is a good-to-eat location only if you have a lot more time to spare. Definitely not a place for a quick bite!

Romancing By The Harbour

Modesto's, VivoCity
South, Singapore
June 2012

Merlion Wayfarer tried out the set dinner one fine evening in Modestos. Costing S$70, it comprised of one appetizer, two main courses (choices include pasta and pizza), and one dessert.

(Source : Modesto's)

Fresh bread is served first with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. A good way to start the meal...

Crema Di Funghi, a "home-made cream of fresh mushroom soup, topped with cream". Sounds absolutely wicked, but tastes thick and mushroomy with hardly any hint of cream. Instead, lots of mushroom bits floating in the thick stew...

A toasted and fragrant Regular Pizza Amatriciana - The ingredients may be simple (tomato, cheese, pork bacon, onions), but the result was quite delicious...

Linguine Alle Vongole - Nothing "flat" about the spaghetti with fresh clams, dried chilli and garic in extra virgin olive oil and white wine sauce...

The original version of Tiramisu Modesto's with mascarpone cheese, espresso, savoiardi fingers and coffee liquer. A romantic way to end the dinner by the sea in a restaurant with dim lighting and professional service staff...

The view from inside the restaurant of the harbour outside...

Everything German In Oktober

Central Fountain Square
Clarke Quay
South, Singapore
October 2012

Last weekend, Merlion Wayfarer was jioh-ed to the Oktoberfest at Clarke Quay. Although it was held in a (relatively) small area in the Central Fountain Square, the whole area was buzzing with activity! There were food stalls, game stalls, stage programs and people laughing, chatting and drinking at cocktail tables and wooden benches.

Open Rice, an online dining guide, was the official online media partner. At its booth, its members could get a free tattoo with a chance to win dining vouchers. Actually, it was more like a compulsory tattoo as it was the prerequisite to a lucky dip.

The Oktoberfest banner hanging above the stage...

A beer game to see which man can hold a heavy beer mug the longest. Apparently, the winner was also the one with the most common sense, as he held the mug a different way from the rest - using his entire hand strength instead of just his wrist strength. Smart!

Merlion Wayfarer absolutely adored Vintry's German Style Crispy Pork Belly and Shiraz's Gourmet German Chicken Sausage Hot Dog. She topped it off with fresh Erdinger from the tap. Shiokz!
