Chinatown - The Chinese New Year Pasar Malam On A Hot Hot Day

Chinatown
Central, Singapore
January 2016

Merlion Wayfarer was recently at the Chinatown Festive Market just before the Chinese New Year weekend. Held in yearly, the festive market spans the grid between Smith Street, Temple Street and Pagoda Street. Here are some of the more interesting snapshots of the walkabout...

Joining the "Packed Like Sardines" crowds this weekend to soak in the festive mood
on a sunny day under a clear blue sky...

A stall full of pomelos (柚子) in the Festive Market. Pomelos signify abundance, prosperity and family togetherness (by the large and round shape)...

Need some cooling from the hot sun and "heaty" cookies?
Go for these watermelon blouse and matching green shorts on sale...

Rainbow colours abound with biscuits and jelly from Taiwan...

Lost in the crowd at the Chinese New Year Festive Market...

The regular roast/waxed (烧蜡) meat stall at the Festive Market has changed hands and changed location. This outlet is quieter and with a smaller selection...

What better way to usher in the Year Of the Monkey for the kids
than to get one of these colourful Monkey Balloons?

Golden-orange pomeloes with "福" (Prosperity) stickers near Lucky Chinatown. Huat Ah!

ArtScience Museum - The Mirror

External to the ArtScience Museum rests a huge parabolic mirror. Within it, the lotus petal facade of the Museum is reflected.

On weekends, tourists and locals alike sit beneath its sheltered face to enjoy the shade it provides and catch up on thirty l their week.

Victoria Theatre & Concert Hall - The Ones Who Played A Part

Empress Place
South, Singapore
July 2014

Outside the Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall, these workers were repairing the steps of the fountain...

It was not an easy task -The heat of the sun was relentless...

They had to bend over awkward positions for long hours at a time...

They made do with pails if they can find any...

Where no tools avail, they used their bare hands on soil and fertilizer...

In the afternoon, they were still there...

While Sir Stamford Raffles watches over them...

Let us not forget their hard work and resilience.

An Afternoon By The Bay Near The Sands

Marina Bay
South, Singapore
May 2014

It was a breezy afternoon. Stratus clouds streak across the sunset sky and an evening breeze blow across the waters, rustling the few fallen leaves on the pathways.

Outside the Esplanade, an amphitheatre lies. At the forefront of it lay steps.

Today a line of people sat - from tourists, to a couple from a local tertiary institution, to a group of foreign national workers awaiting their transport back from their work site.

Such is the diversity that the magnificence of the bay view attracts...

On a warm evening in a park last weekend, Mr Lee was out on a buggy ride, relaxing in the evening breeze, the light-hearted atmosphere, the harmony of people of many nationalities enjoying the greenery, and the cohesiveness of families picnicking on the grass patches.

It's certainly good to see you, Mr Lee!

Chinatown Street Market 2014 - Walk Walk Walk

South Bridge Road, Chinatown
Central, Singapore
January 2014

To traverse the street market, one has to walk, walk and walk along the streets in Chinatown so that one can see what the stallholders have to sell, sell, sell in order to make a good decision on what to buy, buy, buy...

Not all of Chinatown is bustling. Food Street is closed for renovations...

Railings all ready in case of huge crowds at night and during the weekends...

A cheery busker flashes his toothy grin...

迎接财神!

The quieter side of the CNY light-up at South Bridge road...

Walkable narrow streets with fewer people during the weekdays...

Festivals - Chinese New Year

Chinatown Street Market 2014 - Sell Sell Sell

South Bridge Road, Chinatown
Central, Singapore
January 2014

At the Chinese New Year street market, sellers galore. Makeshift stalls are decked with goods - both edible and inedible - in the brightest colours of the rainbow. Stallholders shout and call into loudspeakers and give out hundreds of free samples. All so that more customers will come. And Buy, Buy, Buy...

Yes, you are here - right in the heart of the Chinese New Year street market in bustling Chinatown. The stores nearest to the Chinatown MRT station stick to their usual wares - Touristy stuff for visitors to buy back as mementos...

Some stalls are not ready yet, while others are doing a roaring trade...

During Chinese New Year, goods are "advertised" in auspicious colours of red and gold,
with auspicious sounding names...

Gold horses, coins and ingots - Huat ah!

Bulbs that will bloom...

Bamboo shoots that will change your luck - In figures of 8...

A cuter version of bamboo shoots...

"S$6 a packet!", he announces as he snips up the seaweed crackers for the curious aunties who wanted to sample his wares. "Have some too!" his friend cajoles.
"Aiyoh!" his boss looks from behind and shakes his head in disapproval...

1001 bright colours...

Peanuts - plain and garlic...

Rainbow sweets...

Plum jelly - tastes best refrigerated!

Animal parts and products - Can look a bit like lab samples flattened and waxed...

Fresh and green...

Wishing everyone a happy and prosperous year of the horse!
