S-One Expo Stuttgart - Wooden Figurines

S-One Expo Stuttgart
Marina At Keppel Bay
South, Singapore
November 2012

Wooden figurines were first produced in the Erzgebirge region in East Germany, and in Black Forest, in the south-west. These ares are home to huge tracks of forest covering 60% of their land area. These wooden figurines provided a good source of income for the inhabitants.

Over the years, the wooden figurines of the Nutcracker, Santa Claus, and animals have become popular with some of them found in the famous Black Forest Cuckoo Clocks.

The walls and tables of this booth were laminated with
wallpaper of the Nutcracker with its oversized head and big teeth...

The amount of details in these carvings is beautifully intricate - On a backpack carried by a wooden figurine, there are even smaller figurines, small farm animals, and wooden houses. See the clown hanging from the rack and the piglet at his feet?

A halved figure with a paper silhouette pasted at its feet...

Merlion Wayfarer would like to think that it is a rotor blade at the back of the guy in black. Who knows, he might be a fairy tale character flies like a helicopter?

But thinking back, the round "fan" could also be the brush of a chimney sweep?

S-One Expo Stuttgart - German Delicacies

S-One Expo Stuttgart

The bowl of Apple Pudding Cake (S$5) served with a generous dollop of cream sauced. The top was laced with loads of baked nuts and sweet raisins. The pudding was moist to the bite and had a mild milky flavour...

Thick cocoa-laden chocolate with nuts (S$8)...

Little chocolate hedgehogs (S$8) with icing balls as "spikes" - Simply too adorable to eat!

  • Sahnesauerkraut (Cream Cabbage)
  • Kasespatzle (Cheese Pasta)

A really yummy meal of German sausages...

The Frankfurter Würstchen (little Frankfurter sausage) is a thin, boiled sausage of pure pork in a casing of mutton's intestine. The special taste is acquired by a special method of smoking the pork. They should in no case be cooked; they are only allowed to be heated in hot water for about eight minutes. Traditionally, they are served with bread, custard, horseradish and/or potato salad (Wikipedia 2012). Errrm, Merlion Wayfarer thought it tasted delicious until she knew about the intestines and its semi-cooked state...

Ingredients
Merlion Wayfarer had a look at some of the most delicious ingredients that went into the food above:

  • Ox Heart Tomatoes: Ever wondered how they got their name?

  • Oxheart tomatoes have a characteristic heart shape, from which their name comes. They are a sweet type of fruit and can be grown in a variety of colors and sizes. Most oxheart tomatoes are large, ranging in size to as much as a pound or slightly more. This makes them especially popular, since they are easily grown and produce a great deal of large tomatoes (eHow Home 2012).

  • Panicles Cocktail Tomatoes

  • They look sooo perfect! Are they real?

And finally, to top it all off, what's German food without some German beer?

Cadbury Dairy Milk Marvellous Creations - Lotsa Popping Fun!

One Fine Day In One Dark Cinema
    Singapore
    November 2012

After spotting Cadbury Dairy Milk Marvellous Creations in September, Merlion Wayfarer finally ventured to try the Jelly Popping Candy Beanies today! At a showing of The Twilight Saga : Breaking Dawn Part II (Thanks GV!), Merlion Wayfarer popped the very first bar into her mouth in the midst of a romantic scene between Edward and Bella Cullen.

And within minutes, she broke out in giggles in the silence of the dark cinema! Once the chocolate melted, the candy started popping and sizzling in her mouth! It went fzzz! and pop! One bit even swooshed out when she started laughing non-stop!

Definitely a fun way to eat a Cadbury and... what a memorable way to remember the Twilight Saga "forever"!

    Little Treasures Of Tiong Bahru

    Tiong Bahru
    South, Singapore
    November 2012

Built in the 1930s, Tiong Bahru Estate is one of the oldest housing estates in Singapore. It was the first project undertaken by the Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT), a government body administered by the British colonial authority, to provide for mass public housing in Singapore. The estate consists of about 30 apartment blocks with a total of over 900 units. The apartment blocks are made up of two to five-storey flats and the units are assorted three to five-room apartments.

Despite being built for the masses, these units are now largely taken up by affluent locals, expatriates who prefer a home near town, upmarket offices, and cosy cafes. Instead of the warm, neighbourly environment in the past where doors are left open and neighbours interact with each other, the atmosphere now is cold, unfriendly and distant. Despite being there on a weekday, Merlion Wayfarer's photo kaki was quite astounded when people they came across hastily went back to their houses and offices and shut the down on them. Hmmm... could it also be a case of too many photographers in the past who had not observed proper ethics in their photography visits?

Anyway, there were still many gems to be found in this old estate, which always makes it a pleasure to walk and walk and walk there...

A drain runs through it. It separates the old low-level flats from the cosmopolitan shopping mall and upmarket condominium nearby...

The antique white stone bridge borders the two. A variety of interesting passers-by cross it - a grandfather with his granddaugather, an impatient lady, a senior with a trolley...

Mei Mei wants to eat her Milo ice cream. It was dripping all over her hands.
Ah Gong decides to stop and let her finish it. The newspaper reading can come later lah...

A phone hangs on the edge of the drain - Its handset wire and land line is attached to the cement in the drain. Oooooh... who is using it now?

    过路人的背影...

Delicious eclairs and swiss rolls that Merlion Wayfarer and kaki almost wanted to buy and promote for the owner. Until she demanded that we asked for permission to snap a shot. There will be times when a smile and a greeting ain't good enough. Well, there are always better outlets and nicer owners around...

A cool delivery lorry with a personalized "number plate"...

A dedicated "Dog In A Jar" sculpture customization service for your dogs...

"Perfect Love Withstands Obstacles" - in a cage? Hmmm...

A preggie spotted lizard in bright daylight...

Fascinating leaves that had little leaves growing around its edges. Merlion Wayfarer vaguely remembers it as a species of bryophyllum from her science classes way back in primary school...

Ssssshhh! Says a resident. It will kill him if you make any noise at night...

Merlion Wayfarer ventured into a shophouse along the way. What she saw were grilles, grilles and more grilles, and dark narrow stairways that one with even a small haversack would have difficulty not bumping into its edges...

Finally, a patch of blue sky!

Antique cream cakes from a traditional confectionery. Full of cream, but filled with loads of nostalgia...

Hidden in a little room is the quaint little French Bookshop. Owned by a French gentleman, this book store sells new and old books in French and English. Merlion Wayfarer met up with Anique and Andree, who shared with her about French food and places to go in France. They've started a feature recently which allows artists to display their wares there. On display here are some colourful pouches which will be packed into styrofoam boxes before being put in a brown paper bag with a sticker. What an interesting concept!
