Canton Paradise - Freeflow MSG In Dishes

On a trip to the North-East, Merlion Wayfarer recently went to the Canton Paradise at Compass One. Located at Level 3, it is situated in a row of eateries together with several other restaurants.

Wanting something warm and healthy, she decided to order the Double-Boiled Superior Chicken Soup, together with her usual outside favourite of Shrimp Dumpling Noodles. To supplement, she ordered a plate of Canton Style Kampong Chicken.

This is what came. OK, looks ordinary enough.

However, the taste was totally shocking.

Kampong Chicken
Being Kampong Chicken, we were willing to forgo the succulence for a healthier dish. However we never expected a totally dry dish with its highly-unappetizing dried-out colour.

Chicken Soup
Within the first mouthful, she could immediately feel the MSG stinging her lips. The strong MSG taste and high salt content made it difficult to finish the soup, even among 3 people.

Shrimp Dumpling Noodles
The sauce over the noodles was likewise exceedingly salty, leaving us wondering if there's a promotion for salt on that day?

All in all, we had a totally unpleasant experience. After the dinner, one of us had swollen lips and nose, another had a bad migraine, and the third had abdominal discomfort.

What happened, Canton Paradise?

Broken Stick Bit In Magnum Mini Ice Cream

After a hot day at work, Merlion Wayfarer happily opened up the box of Magnum Mini which she bought from NTUC recently.

While she was just biting into the ice cream, she tasted something really tough to bite through, and realized that it was a stick bit! It was a shock as she had just bitten through the chocolate crust of the ice cream and was nowhere near the stick at all.

Here's a close-up of the stick bit with the ice cream...

And the ice cream with its packaging showing the flavour...

Merlion Wayfarer was glad that she she did not swallow the stick bit, which would have resulted in a very painful procedure if it did get stuck in her throat or digestive system.

NTUC Fairprice, this was purchased at your Serangoon Fairprice outlet. Merlion Wayfarer hopes that you will work with the manufacturer and distributor to prevent such food lapses from recurring. The situation might be a lot worse if it happened to a young child or a senior citizen. Here is the batch code if you need more details.

Merlion Wayfarer would also like to take this opportunity to caution all consumers to be careful of what they eat and chew carefully, even if the product is from an established and renown food manufacturer located in Singapore.

Help! The Fan Blew Up!

Singapore
August 2013

This was a Morries fan. It was less than 6 months old when  this happened earlier this week.

According to Merlion Wayfarer's family member:
"The fan was very noisy for the past few days. So noisy until I had to switch it off. Tonight it was noisy again and I was trying to adjust it. It wasn't as noisy as before. Who knows, just as I was about switch off the fan, there was a loud grating noise. Next thing I know, I felt a bump on my arm and everything was in pieces all over the room. I hadn't even touched the fan!

Apparently the impact of the disintegration was so great that it blew the metal cover (which was still clipped to the other cover in two places) across the room. My arm was slightly bruised from the impact.

Some of the pieces of the fan were sticking to my curtain. It was scary as I was standing beside the fan and could have been badly hurt."

NTUC Fairprice, this was purchased at your Nex Xtra outlet. Merlion Wayfarer hopes that you will take such reviews into consideration when bringing in similar products.

Afternote
JK, the importer for the Morries product line, has since replaced the fan with a new set and attended to this case with a personalized installation of the product. Thank you for the prompt attention!

Hair In The Salad

8 Degrees Taiwanese Bistro (八度空间)
North-East, Singapore
June 2012

8 Degrees recently moved to a new location in the North-East after the media publicity over parking space along Yio Chu Kang Road.

At that time, due to the new opening, they were offering set meals in bento boxes as a promotion. Merlion Wayfarer ordered a "8 degrees mango fish box" at S$9.80 - A fish bento set that came with soup and tea.

The thick and sweet mango sauce complimented the crispiness of the fish batter. There was an 3/4-boiled egg and some salad. Two mini Taiwan sausages added a nice touch to the cheap plastic box.

Halfway through her meal, Merlion Wayfarer was quite horrified to find a hair in the salad. Instead of replacing the entire set, the owner replaced just the salad with another type.

Oh horrors of horror... Even though the service was good, with an endless supply of plain water, find such gross things in the meal was a no-no for Merlion Wayfarer. Yikes...
