Tonight, Singapore’s Orchestra of the Music Makers (OMM) will perform one of the most ambitious pieces of classical music, Gustav Mahler’s 8th Symphony or “Symphony of a Thousand”, live in Singapore as a tribute to SG50.
Featuring no less than eight local and international vocal soloists, four large choirs (including three from Australia), a children’s choir, large symphony orchestra, separate brass ensemble and an organ, this is only the second time the symphony will be performed in Singapore’s history.

About Mahler’s 8th Symphony…
The monumental piece starts with a medieval Pentecost hymn and culminates in the closing scene of Goethe’s Faust, drawing together fundamental philosophical ideas of Western history. Mahler wrote this immensely moving and spectacular symphony as a “gift to the entire nation” for his beloved Germany, which is fitting for OMM in its tribute to SG50.
The Orchestra's Executive Committee envisioned bringing Mahler 8 to Singapore four years ago. Since then, the group has been working towards this collective vision, laying the ground for the idea to become a reality to make this performance a gift to the nation on its 50th birthday.
About OMM…
Comprising 140 accomplished musicians, OMM was established in 2008 to provide an outlet for talented orchestral players, many of whom have developed careers outside of music. For the Mahler 8 concert, OMM will be joined by professional vocal soloists from around the region including sopranos
Being a volunteer orchestra, OMM has relied on the generosity of sponsors to enable its development, particularly HSBC, which is also a presenting sponsor for Mahler 8, and the Lee Foundation, which have supported the ensemble since its inception in 2008. The orchestra has also recently secured the support of JTC, Ascendas Gives Foundation and Singapore Press Holdings as sponsors of the event.
OMM is also backed and supported by government bodies including the National Arts Council, the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, and the SG50 Celebration Fund Committee, which provided funding to make this initiative possible.
OMM is undertaking several community outreach initiatives in the lead-up to the event, including public performances and a schools programme to enable young music fans attend the concert. These activities are in line with OMM's mission to make music accessible and ensure that the SG50 concert is an inclusive occasion. Furthermore, OMM aims to drive interest in the art of classical music to a wider audience and contribute towards the development of the local music scene in Singapore.
Tickets are on sale now at SISTIC for the concert, which will be held over two nights 10-11 July at the Esplanade Concert Hall.
